Congratulations on your new puppy! Thank you for choosing Frey Pet Hospital to help protect and care for your new addition to your family. Bringing a new puppy or kitten home is a very exciting time. We will help to make this an amazing experience for you and your puppy by providing the best medical care both now and in the future.
Our puppy wellness program is designed to help get your puppy started on the right path to a long and healthy life. The first few months are a critical period in your puppy’s development, and we can give you the support and tools necessary to help him or her grow into a well-mannered, healthy dog, including information and advice on nutrition, training, behavior, and socialization.
An initial series of vaccines will result in 3 to 4 visits with us and we encourage you to ask questions. There is always a lot to talk about during these puppy visits. Your first visit is scheduled for an hour so that we have plenty of time for questions as well as time for your newest family member to meet all of our family. These meetings are the highlight to our staff’s day. At the start of this first exam, one of our technicians will go over a new puppy slideshow to make sure you and your puppy are started out on the right foot (and paw!). If you would like to preview this slideshow, please click here.
During each of your visits, one of our skilled doctors will perform a complete physical exam on your puppy to assure he or she is in excellent physical health. The doctor will be looking for congenital defects, hearing and vision issues, cleft palate, proper bite, hernias, and heart defects.
We look forward to meeting your new puppy!
Puppy Vaccine Descriptions
DHLPP This is vaccine protects your puppy from four diseases – distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza. These diseases are debilitating and can cause death. Nearly every dog will be exposed during its lifetime, making vaccination a must. This vaccine starts out as yearly but all but the leptospirosis portion can soon be converted to a 3 yr vaccination.
- Parvo is an intestinal viral infection that results in bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting and extreme depression. It is highly contagious and life threatening.
- Distemper is a respiratory, neurological and gastrointestinal virus that is also most often fatal.
- Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease affecting the kidneys and liver starting with diarrhea / vomiting that is a zoonosis and transferable to people.
- Parainfluenza is a respiratory disease and part of the kennel cough syndrome.
Rabies is a vaccination that is required by the state government for both dogs and cats. This vaccination help prevent this deadly disease from being transmitted to humans. Even indoor animals are required to be vaccinated and should be due to the most common source of infection being bats
Bordetella is a vaccine given to dogs to prevent tracheobronchitis also known as kennel cough. This is a very contagious virus and bacterium causing a dry hacking cough that can persist for weeks.
Lyme is a non-core vaccination. This means it is recommended, not for all dogs, but only for those who are considered “high risk”. Lyme is spread by Deer Ticks, which are common in wooded and grassland areas, so dogs that frequent these types of areas should be vaccinated.
